Description

The name means nothing. It is simply three random pecks on my keyboard. I’d filled pages and pages of random, 3-character combinations, just to see what would happen, and I must say that I found myself intrigued by CV+, and so I found an excuse to work it into an image. I’ve discovered that over one particular weekend, I’d snapped enough photos to keep my gallery going for more than a year…and needless to say, I was quite pleased with that. This image was born last Saturday, as Corey and I descended from the Brown Line platform at Lake Street. We were above the State and Lake intersection: a normally shadowy, rather boring intersection. The northern border of The Loop is defined by the elevated tracks, making the curve from Wabash Avenue to Lake Street. The elevated tracks cast shadows: or they would, under normal, unobstructed circumstances. As it stands, the el-shadows are cast into shadow by the buildings looming to either side of the tracks. Pigeons once roosted within the track supports, but they’ve been chased away and spiky, barbed protuberances now sprout like some brittle, pointy fungus from every conceivable pigeon-friendly spot. I wasn’t interested in spiky stuff. I was drawn by the sight of State Street, stretching northward. I liked what I saw, though I can’t really define why I liked the scene. I suspect it was a combination of things: people, weak light, weak shadows, and the rest of Chicago looming to the north, like a city glimpsed from within the mouth of a cave. At any rate, I liked what I saw and endeavored to capture some of it. This is the result. It’s a glimpse into an alternate Chicago, a city familiar with CV+. I suspect the name refers to shoe designers. Or something. The non-tweaked aspects of this image were captured last Saturday, as Corey and I descended from the Brown Line platform and meandered onto Lake Street. I was fascinated by the odd quality of light, when facing north, and so I took a quick snap. I felt that this image stood perfectly well on its own, but I also realized that I wasn’t particularly willing to allow somebody else’s advertisement remain in my shot…and so I rifled through my files, found another image and immediately cropped/reshaped it to cover the over-hyped, brooding intensity of some hyper-trendy men’s cologne. I rather like the cryptic CV+ better. Shortly after this picture was taken, but long before it was tweaked, Corey and I spent the day with Tara and Bill. As expected, we spent the day roaming the city, voraciously recording everything we could with our cameras. It was—as you might guess—an immensely fun day, and this is yet another trophy from that day. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all at the start of a great weekend.

Great POV, great lighting, great writing...and have come to expect nothing less from you. I am intrigued by what you, Corey, Bill and Tara are going to come up with on these visits and trips together. That is so cool. In 1986 we were on State Street in a short visit to Chicago. I say short because we had something like a 9 hour layover between flights, so we decided to take in a little of Chicago. We were amazed, and I came away with a tee-shirt that said "Chicago" on it. I like Chicago. Don't know if we could live there, but I love to visit for sure!

I know its wrong of me but the woman's hair has got my attention. Very close in colour to that of my spouse. Hair length and style are not the same but that does not seem to matter. They are like yet not like at all. Very strange to be thinking about these things.

I love the fact that each person in the photo is immersed in its own history. Together in 10 meters of land, but to a universe of distance between them. There seems to be an interest of the girl with the white stripe about the man with the jeans (At least she looks that way, but not necessarily to him. Could be a perspective effect), but he definitely ignores her existence. The light is perfect.

CV+....never heard of it! Calvin 'VINE' perhaps....... Calvin Klein's 'CREEPY' half brother....who eventually 'GROWS' on you! It's good to see that someone has relieved themselves on the right side.

SUPERB! in every aspect. I am against displaying 'somebody else’s advertisement' on any garment I wear also, unless it is so discreet as to go unnoticed.

Oh my, it looks as though the tall fellow with the red legs has just peed down his right pant leg...it's not wet anywhere else, LOL!

There's a plush softness to this image that I find immensely attractive; a very Chip-ish street shot, beautifully done!

The perspective makes this! Great shot. I love it that you changed out the ad ... nothing more annoying than being bombarded by other people's agendas. The religion of shopping is no more interesting to me than any other.

CV+ sounds like some new programming language. Do you know something we don't know? Will Microsoft be sending you an offer anytime soon? That would be tough...you'd have to move to the Seattle area and put up with us some more:) Cool shot my friend...and now I know where the north end of the loop is too...!

I like your poster you put on this. Add to that a wonderful POV and you've got a great image. I'd totally read a magazine if it was called "CV+" but then, I do circulate in an odd crowd that probably influences my take on the world...
