Description

I never really expected a lamp, bananas, an apple and potatoes to comprise an interestingly compelling still life. I’d spent the weekend with Corey, visiting with Bill and Tara andYvonne. We meandered around the central parts of Chicago, snapping pictures voraciously. As a result of photo-nabbing, we also spent a lot of time talking, laughing, and at various evening-time hours, eating good, nibbly things including Pecan Sandies (one of my favorite species of cookie.) As with all great weekends, however, that particular weekend ended, and so I had to make my way from Corey’s back to residential territory on the opposite (and far less photogenic) end of the city. I wasn’t in any great hurry to go, and I’m glad I delayed just a bit. Because of my delay, I was able to see an episode of The Prisoner on DVD, and nab this shot: taken just as I’d packed my laptop in its carry-bag, and shouldered into my coat. I guess, in a sense, it’s a parting glance. I am particularly pleased with the way this photo turned out. There is no post-work aside from cropping; the interesting light and colors are as they appeared on my camera screen as I took this photo...I'd simply set my camera to pick up the colors of neon and then aimed at fruit. I love it when things work out that way. The thing I like about parting glances is the fact that they’re seldom permanent, and in terms of art (especially the literary arts) one can play with time and place a parting glance at the beginning of a story. Closure and endings are, usually, two different things; and you don't have to put them in the expected places. The same goes with the photos I've taken...I can place a "final shot" close to the beginning of the "Seattle Weekend" photo series. Now, a week after this shot was taken, I have yet to see another episode of The Prisoner. That will happen, but first, I’m posting this image and wandering around a nearby street and searching for photos to utilize as stock. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a fantastic weekend.

Really enjoy the composition of this image. The lamp shade giving off the blue glow contrasts beautifully against the bronze and shadows of this picture.

Very moody, actually. You are a real master in these color ranges, and your literary-mind always fixes a narrative feel to every photo you take. Wonderful stuff!

That is a cute little blue lamp. I like it alot. I bet its not halogen, I dont like halogen lamps, but the one I have is such and it stands on the floor. SOO not handy. But this little lamp is beautiful and it is a wonderful still life... hehe and I love that potato :D

A super still life, Chip! Love the lighting, and especially the color vibration here. The warm tones are accetuated by the blue of the lampshade - this is great!

You've managed to get complimentary colors, along with halogen and potassium, in the same shot. Maybe not halogen. Maybe tunsten and potassium. Either way, it's a fun thing to think about, and a most excellent image!

Wowwie! This is a real stunner of a shot, Chip; as stated by many before me, that blue lampshade is the perfect tie-together element here. Really classy work!!

Wonderful still life. You have a great sense of lighting, indeed. Quite a remarkable scene. Once again, I see a beautiful blue-gold/orange contrast, which you seem to favor. Really cool.

I'm about to post another Chicago image...but first I had to stop by and see what you are up to today/tonight. A mighty interesting still life...filled with some of the better things to eat IMHO...but wait, BANANAS in a Chipka photo? What's with that? Beautiful composition and night time soft colors! Niceeeeee:)

Ah 'The Prisoner', I haven't seen that series in quite some time. It's amazing just how much of the story holds up well even today. Little comes across as dated. And people still talk about and try to unravel it. Have you ever seen 'Six Into One'? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VscOjhdT-xU&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PLC480F9E22D8B88FB Your photo is impressive, clean and spartan. The blue contrasting with the incandescent gold really grabs me. Mixing of cool and warmth perhaps co-existing as they do. Though I must admit, I am reminded of the IKEA ad where, "maybe you feel bad for the lamp. That's because your crazy! It has no feelings!". As opposed to its sad and forlorn cousin left in the rain, this one seems to be caring for this bowl of fruit by shining the nutrition of light onto its charges. "Maybe you think the fruit is afraid of the dark. That's because your crazy! They have no feelings!"

Beautiful texture and lighting. With that warm light and the purple shade, you've achieved an imaginative, complementary gradient. Not only visually pleasing, but technically impactful.

I (most of the time) put all these long stories on my computer and read later as it hurts my eyes here no matter how much I zoom in and that doesn't do much good because you have to stroll until tomorrow lol But I love this simple but beautiful photo yes they make good images indeed!

Wow, nice colors. I love having hot and cold colors in a picture. This is a great example of that, nicely done.

Chip, I really really like this image! I find the vertical lines of lamp pole, chain, wallboard seam and the horizontal line of the table back contrasting with the curves of lamp shade, bananas, apple and ‘taters just as compelling to look at as the juxtaposition of the large yellow/orange/gold tones and much smaller but vividly cool blue. For being an image so full of opposites, I find it very peaceful to gaze upon. How clever of you to manage all that in this still life. : )

Marvelous shot! The simplicity of it, the wonderful lighting, and golden tones are beautiful. Then that shot of blue, makes it outstanding. Superb composition, light, and colors.
