Queen Victoria (1819-1901) The grand-daughter of King George III, Victoria I succeeded William IV to become Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, from 1837 to 1901, and Empress of India, from 1876 to 1901. Her reign of nearly 64 years (Victorian period), was marked by the development of the British Empire and the Industrial Revolution, which brought major economic, social and technological changes. The Victoria Memorial is a sculpture placed at the centre of the Victoria Square, Montreal. The fine statue of the Queen Victoria adorning the Victoria Square is the work of sculptor Marshall Wood (1820-1882), and was unveiled in 1872 by Lord Dufferin, the Governor General of Canada. At the time, the area surrounding Victoria Square was a prestigious neighbourhood. It was a donation from a citizens committee, by public subscription, on the occasion of Prince Arthur’s visit to Montreal. The bronze was cast by Holbrook & Company, Chelsea, England in 1869. Il a été financé par un don de un comité de citoyens, par souscription publique, à l'occasion de la visite du Prince Arthur à Montréal. Square Victoria (Square Victoria) a été construit sur l'espace vide à l'intersection de la Côte du Beaver Hall (côte du Beaver Hall) et la rue McGill en 1813. Autrefois connu comme la Place du Marché-à-Foin et de la Place des Commissaires, il a été rebaptisé pour la reine Victoria pour la visite de la puis-prince de Galles (futur roi Édouard VII) en 1860. Square Victoria a subi de nombreuses modifications esthétiques sur son histoire, son fonctionnement à des moments plus que d'un parking, d'autres fois comme un simple espace ouvert, alors qu'à d'autres étant beaucoup plus raffiné et cultivé. La place a été restaurée à sa configuration actuelle en 2002 et 2003. Il dispose d'Hector Guimard Art Nouveau d'entrée extérieur de la station de métro Square-Victoria et arbres bordant les avenues de délimitation. Merci Magik ____________________________________
