In late 2010 we visited St. Augustine, Florida and on December 13, 2010, I posted a photo of the Bridge of Lions. Mike (Faemike55) commented "Where are the lions".
The Bridge of Lions is a bascule bridge that spans the Intracoastal Waterway (Matanzas River) in St. Augustine, Florida. A part of State Road A1A, it connects downtown St. Augustine to Anastasia Island. A pair of Medici lions made of Carrara marble guard the bridge, begun in 1925 and opened February 26, 1927. The lions were removed in February 2005, while the bridge was being refurbished and returned in March 2011. The lions are copies of those found in the Loggia dei Lanzi, in Florence, Italy. The statues were a gift of Dr. Andrew Anderson (1839 to 1924). The lions reference the name "Leon" in Ponce De Leon, which means "Lion" in Spanish. Juan Ponce De Leon discovered Florida in 1513 making it the oldest city in the United States. The bridge is 1545 feet (470.9 meters) long and 34 feet (10.3 meters) wide. The lions only guard the western side of the bridge. The Anastasia Island side is lion less. Zoom for details.
