Description

Was so lucky to capture this one. I was hanging out in the backyard taking pics of a Wasp on the flowers. Heard some buzzing and looked around and there was this cute girl on the BBQ. Rather big as well. About 2.5 cm. First time (and probably only) I have seen this one. Pretty sure the ID is Xenox habrosus. Waiting on Bug Guide to tell me. Thanks for looking and comments. The wings are incredible! FULL SIZE PLEASE! -Bruce

You are absolutely right, those transparent wings are just to die for! I cannot help you with, what type of wasp it is, it looks more like one of our big March flies, which usually annoy our horses - but what do I know of insects? not much - still learning myself! but it would be good to find out. mysterious and splendid image, BB PS I just googled it - it's a "huge fly!"

Is a "Special Forces" fly. (I can tell by the camouflaged uniform, although I do not see the battalion patches)LOL Incredible macro. Instant fav.

Excellent! We have some here that look familiar but they pack quite a bite, so if he appeared on my arm, my first reaction would be to swat him!
