Description

I’m sure there are all sorts of names for the architectural business going on in this photograph; as expected, I captured this shot while Tara and Bill were in Chicago. I was able to spend the weekend with them and with Corey, meandering around the city and going into all of the buildings I don’t normally spend time going into. Indeed, during the second Renderosity Photo Ninja Meeting, I managed to go into Chicago-buildings I didn’t even know existed. The city is know for some of the most amazing architecture in the world, but the odd thing is, many Chicagoans ignore it. Admittedly, some of the most architecturally-interesting buildings aren’t exactly open to the camera-toting public. The Crain Communications building stands at the corner of Michigan and State. It lends its almost surreal beauty to a couple of night-shots that appear earlier in my gallery. I have other shots of the building as well, and those will appear later. It is a marvel of what I’ve come to call Chicago Baroque, though there are some flagrantly rococo elements to the structure itself: decorative thingies in place simply to provide extra curls and flourishes. As I took this shot, I was more interested in the play of colors and textures; the main lobby of the Crain Communications building is defined by its dome. I’m sure that at some point, someone will provide a full shot of that dome. At the time I took this photo, I was more interested in the pale light shining in from the window, and it’s contrast to the warmer interior light of the lobby itself. Tara, Bill, Corey, and I managed to spend a substantial amount of time in the Crain lobby, gorging ourselves on architectural features. Tara has already posted a partial crop of the dome, and this is another. I suspect if we all combine our photographic fragments, we can construct the dome itself as a kind of digital mosaic. That particular project appeals to me, but until such a mosaic finds its way into existence, here is a rather non-dome-ish portion of the Crain dome, though you can see the very edge of it in this shot. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great week.

This is a superb image although, initially, somewhat disorienting for me. For a moment I couldn't figure out whether I was looking up or straight ahead. I love the combination of colors and lighting. Fantastic angles. The windows at the bottom look like a lit floor. Very well done.

this is super. If you wish you can go back and lay down on the floor and take about 50 to 100 shots to cover the whole area and get the freeware ICE to put it together for you. it a easy program as you drag all the photos in at one time and sit back and wait. then you can contrast and do what ever with the finish image it makes. i do like the colors and textures here

Very cool. Initially I thought I was looking at a staircase. I'm not an architectural expert either, but yeah I'm sure is a name for it! Well done Chip.

!!! I actually had to go back and look at my files to figure out where you took this. I was so focused on the little bits that I didn't even see these windows! I've got several of them from the outside, and they've crept in amongst some of the ones from inside, but again ... we were standing in the same place and got TOTALLY different pictures. Amazing! This is fantastic, my dear. I love what YOU saw, and how you've presented it. SO different from anything I did! Excellent!

Whatever it is you've created an amazing view of it. I had fun staring at it in zoom - the mind starts playing tricks and changing your mental POV. Nicely seen and captured.

I really like this Chip. Like I said to Clive the other day - it is such a pity that the fast modern life does not allow the time for detail like this. It really sucks. Wonderful light, coloring, textures... everything. Yeah - I like!!!

Do I know where and when you took this very, very impressive, almost abstract view of dome/arch/windows? You bet, check this out;-) You didn't feel the eye of the camera on your back did you? Super shot my friend!!!

well, your work is exquisite as always, this snippet of architecture has been given ancient breath & light by you, so common to all you do; and you've taken a chunk of a straight old building with the kind of detail many see everyday, and made it speak languages from many places & times. Gorgeous interplay between gold & blue, and wonderful sense of color overall. Chip, I finally put up the dedication to you. You can't know what I went through with that writing, ugh---I'll spare you. I haven't written fiction in ages and it was just too much too soon. So I did a new image & hope it and my words do you service. I'll send you a link soon with an upload of the original(s). (The original wasn't just of much higher resolution, but I had more panels too, though they may be ruined beyond recognition now. I am violent to my art.) It'll be there if you want it. I"m sorry I wasn't with any of you when you took this image, I'm terribly reliable & difficult to navigate with these days, which I hope one day will change. But I was thrilled to know you were all together. This is just one indication of the light you bring to your visits, wherever they are, wherever they take you. Loving & beautiful work work from you. I hope you're doing well.

I love this! Wonderful colors, shapes, and light! Helle said it perfectly. The colors, shapes, and light, are in such pleasing harmony. The straight lines in the lighted window, tone down the opulent patterns, the dark brown does the same for the bright gold. The light coming in and a reflection of the gold, make pretty highlights on the dark triangle. I really like that dark triangle. Cool brown tones, with superb detail, and lovely highlights. Magnificent composition! I like this very much!
