In May 1985, I went to Calton Hill, Edinburgh, Scotland, to see the Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson Monument. That is the photo on the right. Sad to say, overcast and raining. A few days later, I was at the base of Nelson's Column, in the middle of Trafalgar Square. Raining like pouring buckets. Trafalgar Square, named after the battle, is a public space and tourist attraction in central London, England, UK. At its center is Nelson's Column, which is guarded by four lion statues at its base. That is the photo on the left. The whole monument is 169 feet 3 inches (51.59 meters) tall from the bottom of the pedestal to the top of Nelson's hat. Photos scanned. Zoom works! This information from Wikipedia: I think that I have mentioned my penchant for military history. One of my childhood heroes was Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson. He died on this date, October 21st 1805. He was a flag officer, famous for his service, in the Royal Navy, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. He was noted for his inspirational leadership and superb grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics, which resulted in a number of decisive naval victories. He was wounded several times in combat, losing one arm and the sight in one eye. Of his victories, the best known and notable was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, during which he was shot and killed by an enemy marksman. When his body was returned to England, he was placed in a lead casket which was placed into a wooden casket.
