Description

That's what all the adults of the Village told Red before she would venture into the forest. But there was nothing to heed. If it were not for the distant nocturnal cries, Red would never have believed wolves even existed. With her own eyes, she only first saw one upon the eve of her sixteenth birthday and then this one wolf kept a discrete distance. Darting from tree to shadow and back again. More curious than dangerous. More troubling to Red was her father's alarm when this first sighting was related to him. It seemed to Red that the wolves feared people far more than the other way. They certainly practiced the ancient proverb more devoutly than the people who coin it. None ever strayed into the village. Few, were the reports of livestock being taken by one of the hungry predators. They may be a threat to some creatures - as they must be - but kith and kin had little to fear so Red reasoned. But then came a late afternoon early in the harvest. The air chilled, the fog rolled in dense and heavy, blue sky became blotted with clouds of gray and trees transformed into shadows. The light was being banished from Darkling Woods as Red heard those first whispers in the spreading darkness.

Clayton, just let me say OUTSTANDING job on both scene and story. Considering the talent you have for expressing yourself through your words it would be great to see you do more like this one. You really brought this image to life in a chilling fashion my friend.

This is a great work. I really like the text, especially. This is a much layered and complex scene. Perhaps setting up a series? Bravo!

Excellent image and story. I like the pace of the story, and the hint of unknown menace in her father's reaction. Is it a real danger or a long held prejudice? It's interesting that she is told not to heed the wolves rather than to run like hell away from them. What do the wolves say, and what danger is in their words? It seems Red is about to find out. Wonderful build up of suspense in the last paragraph. Great composition, atmosphere, and depth in the image. I like her pose, looking over her shoulder, the shadowy nature of the wolf, and his glowing eyes.
