The flight of the Avocets over Kalloni Salt Pans*... Le vol des Avocettes au-dessus des Salines de Kalloni... *Kalloni Salt Pans : At the head of the Gulf of Kalloni, where it is passed by the main road to Mitilene, the shallow waters have been divided into evaporation pools for salt production. The Pied Avocet, Recurvirostra avosetta, is a large black and white wader in the avocet and stilt family, Recurvirostridae. They breed in temperate Europe and western and Central Asia. It is a migratory species and most winter in Africa or southern Asia. Their breeding habitat is shallow lakes with brackish water and exposed bare mud. L'Avocette élégante (Recurvirostra avosetta) est la seule espèce d'avocette vivant en Europe. Les adultes ont un plumage blanc sauf un capuchon noir et des marques noires sur les ailes.
