Description

Adrienne Dumont wanted to marry and go to the new world with her love but he refused saying it would be too dangerous. After seeing him to the ship her lover would sail to the new world, Adrienne purchased and assumed the identity of a young cabin boy. She then sailed with the crew to the new world disguised as a man, and became known as Petit Jean "Little John". She crossed the Atlantic maintaining her secret identity, and then sailed up the Mississippi into what is now known as Arkansas. At some point after arriving in Arkansas, Petit Jean became ill, although the exact nature of her illness remains unclear. Whatever her illness might have been, her identity was revealed. Her love found that the love he left behind had been with him all this time dressed in men's clothes! Unfortunately, she succumbed to the illness and died. Her last request was to be buried atop the mountain she so loved and spent the last summer of her life exploring. That mountain is now called Petit Jean Mountain. (Or as the locals call it Petty Jean)
There are many variations to this tale. This is the romantic version; which I prefer. Some say her spirit still lingers giving the place an enchanted feeling. Whatever the reality or truth may be the mountain indeed had an enchanted quality to it the day we were there. The mountain peak was shrouded in low lying clouds that gave it a truly enchanted feel. Photo taken last Sunday at Petit Jean Mountain inside of Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas' first state park. According to legend, this is the grave of Petit Jean. Post work by Marshall. Thank you for stopping by. Make it a great day!
