I am 58 years young, live in Johannesburg, South Africa and I'm a true product of my continent. I love the bush, the animals, sunshine, sunsets - oh well, anything to do with nature. I am unmarried and have three sons - 37, 33 and 30 respectively and three granddaugters aged 12, 6 and 4 respectively and obviously the light of my life! Photography has always been a passion and I have loved it since I can remember. I was still using a SLR camera and only switched to digital only in late 2007! My other passion is travel and I have been lucky enough to have travelled fairly widely. There are however still many, many places I would love to visit "one day." I am truly an amateur photographer and do it merely as a hobby. So please be gentle when you comment on my work. :-) Thank you Piet, my dear friend, for convincing me to place my work on Renderosity. You owe me one! Hugs, Carin xx

Very cool and yet disturbing image

It still makes for a very interesting photograph - much like the sunsets in the Tvl! Clive

Beautiful all the same.

We have industry here that has almost identical stacks like this, and they claim only steam is let out into the atmosphere (according to EPA regulations). We hope that is all it is. Great image to show modern life has many risks.

The pollution has given the sky a super tone but all a bit ominous, the shot is great.

oh yes, sad but good for the picture...i know about this- wonderful done Carin!.. and after all, must be a beautiful landscape there!

Beautiful shot, Carin. Even pollution can be beautiful.

in the NE there are some terrible polluters but also in Texas the coal burning electrical generators puts out pollution like crazy

I tend to agree with charpix...the EPA would be all over factories these days that sent pollution into the air. And of course we really don't produce much anymore...all the steel now comes from the Far East. We just ship train load after train load of coal to China so they can produce for us...and we wonder why they are polluting:) But then again, this is Cleveland...one of our dirtier cities for years and years, so who knows. BUT, your picture is perfect...maybe the sun looks this way when refracted by water droplets in the air? I'll do a little research on Cleveland's air quality and let you know if I find anything smart:)

Powerful image. Great shot Carin!

When there's nothing in the air, the sky has no color. Believe me! I know! LOL! Our air here gets washed on a regular basis, and when the sun goes down, it just gets dark. As soon as you've got dust, smoke, whatever, hanging in the air, the sun gives the sky such fabulous colors! I love the soft colors you've got here, regardless of the reason. It's gorgeous!

Fantastic shot, Carin! :)

I like the background!

Great shot Carin I am not sure I agree with the US (or any other country for that matter) having a great record with regard to pollution or greenhouse gas etc.. Maybe when they pay as much for Gas as we do here in the UK things will change for the better..

wonderful world of ice and snow. Thank you for the nice photo

Who needs the Apocalypse when you've got the Midwestern USA? There's something in the air here (and it isn't just industrial pollution!) and it was enough to inspire various writers in various genres to declare that there's something unspeakably depraved in this part of the world...the writers like William Gibson have observed it in the very bone structure of the people, though I tend to think it's something in the eyes. Having said that I'll say that pollution, of the industrial sort, does have a specific way of bending light and filtering it in the most odd ways. This is one of those scenes that reminds me of just how bleak this part of the world is, and there's a particular, compelling quality to that--rather like watching a train-wreck. You don't want to see it, but you cannot bring yourself to look away. All-in-all, however, this is a marvelous photograph and it's wonderfully otherworldly, and a bit infernal...but what's more infernal than a smokestack, belching noxious life-mutating stuff into the atmosphere. What a sight! What a marvel of a telling photograph.

That coloring is called smog except in New York where they call it an Ozone Alert. It makes for awesome apocalyptic sunsets too. ;D Wonderful capture! :)

GREAT CAPTURE

Magnificent color quality in this stellar panorama, Carin. By the title, I felt in my bones that you weren't referring to a pristine beach in South Africa. Poisoning our planet, they are! I'm sitting here choking and wheezing at the thought of it.

From the song Garbage by Bill Steele http://www.peteseeger.net/Garbage.htm Garbage! Garbage! We're filling up the sky with garbage What will we do When there's nothing left to breathe but garbage With mushroom clouds like this we won't need nuclear weapons to wipe us out. As T.S. Elliott wrote, "Not with a bang but a whimper." (or cough) Outstanding image. A real iconic capture.

De très belles couleurs d'un ton pastel. Pour la pollution, n'en parlons pas il y en a presque partout. Très belle prise de vue
