Description

This is a poem I wrote several years back when my daughter's friend's ten year old son was killed on New Years Eve is a helicopter crash. The picture of the dog is from a Broderbund Clip Art CD. Where Did The Boy Go? He is a sad and lonely dog, Just waiting out in the snow. And the poor dog just wonders, “Where did the boy go?” That little boy who cared for him And always showed him so much love. The saddened dog doesn’t know, That little boy went to Heaven above. Just the other day they were running, And having so much fun at play. Then on a holiday trip the family left, Planning on returning in a few days. No one seems to notice him waiting, In that place where they last played. He thinks this is where the boy will Come back, so this is where he stays. But now there’s just that lonely dog, Waiting patiently out in the snow. As his sad lonesome heart keeps asking “Where did the boy he loved so much go?” Copyright M. Doris Fuller

That's a very touching poem. Beautiful, but also sad and poignant. About dogs losing their human loved ones, whether to disease, accident, disaster or other, I read something in Dear Abby a few years ago that people need to know. If your family member or friend dies and he/she has a dog, the dog needs to be brought to his owner's body at the funeral home and allowed to see, but most importantly smell his owner's body one last time. Dogs know when a person(or their body)is dead, and when he smells him(or her),he will accept that that boy or girl who used to play with him is gone. It gives the dog a sense of closure in a way that he/she wouldn't have otherwise. Otherwise, he will always wonder where that boy went.

Awww...this is such a touching piece. Yes, I am sure pets wonder when one they love is gone. If you could just explain it to them....

When I originally posted this poem on my web site [I no longer have my poetry site] I added a plea for people to pay extra attention to the animals who lose their masters because they do miss them & hurt for them.

Brings tears to my eyes. Your poem is just amazing beautiful and so moving for the moment. Mark gives some excellent advice here. In those times people forget that animals have feelings too and as family members they need to have closure in their own way. Thank you Mark for sharing that.

apple-dolli.gif Wonderful poem Doris and so true my friend! Xmas is very soon, every kid want's a puppy, but after a while he is bored (to be weary of) of him and leave him alone, it's a very sad season for doggys & kittys! PS. For me a simple 'dog fawning' tells me much more than a speach for hours of an human!!!!!
