Description

I’m not a great fan of corporate interiors and the faux-elegance they often present in an attempt to present something totally different. In all honesty, corporate interiors are a reflection of the corporate mindset: the bottom line dictates everything and so it stands to reason that the minimalist vibe such places exude is little more than the artifact of a financial concern. Minimalism—a valid form of artistic expression—is also cost effective. Minimalism does not require that a cleaning crew spend extra time polishing and dusting and getting city gunk out of doohickies, dingbats, and extravagant dongles. One quick mop and a dust and you’ve saved—dramatically—on cleaning expenses. That’s the vibe I get whenever passing a lobby intended to showcase that sleek, clean, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century sort of vibe. I saw this bit of minimalism on the night that I sat with Tara and Bill and Corey, munching on Pecan Sandies, drinking diet Coke (which stimulated my appetite for more Pecan Sandies) and talking about anything and everything. I stepped outside for a brief period of nicotine intake, and as I inhaled, exhaled, and contributed to Chicago’s carbon footprint, I walked. In walking, I saw something red. This was it. A lobby. Behind glass. With red accents and an absolute lack of human subjects. I was amazed at the emptiness of it, and wondered if such emptiness was indicative of something else…something inhuman. I suspect that I’m correct in my impression, but I have to say, I like what I saw as it was so clean, so austere, and so completely at odds with the activity on the street around me. I’d say something more about this, but I can’t think of anything. It must be the weather, the lack of caffeine, or the simple fact that there’s a lot to say about emptiness in exactly the same way as there’s nothing to say about it as well. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great weekend.

well, it is big and empty! it cries out to have something totally useless smack in the middle of the space

Looks like a really perfect place for a few Coke vending machines - to add to the red theme, of course! A very nice minimalist capture, Chip! :-D

This reminds me of my grandmother. She was the sort with doilies and ivy strewn wallpaper, yet one wall of her home was this same RED. It was so incongruous to the rest of her home and her, yet obviously there was something under the surface that demanded a red wall. I always liked that about her and I'm so glad you posted this.

I agree with Mike. How about an old gas pump?

Do you know what I like best about this? Well ... in a weird sort of way ... :P The reflection in the window is of the sign for the Roti Mediterranean Grill across the street. Oh man. That was some excellent food! We had lunch there on that Saturday, I think, and it was outstanding. I'd go back there in a heartbeat. As fast food goes, it's amazing! (That was the day we didn't get together until pretty late in the afternoon, which I think was the fault of zero reception for cell phones inside a metal-caged elevator in our hotel.) Anyway. Excellent food. Wonderful memory. Nothing to do with the red wall, except that it's directly across Washington from the Roti. The red wall really needs something else. If you stand there in Street View, you'll see somebody's flags hanging from the ceiling. Sort of a weird use of space, imho, but hey ... who knows why corporate marketeers do what they do? Being retired gives my brain a weird twist. Okay ... the twist was there before ... it's just more noticeable now. Did I remember to say how much I like this shot? I do. It's way cool.

A three-dimensional Piet Mondrian! The De Stijl room, maybe.

Hmmm ! Exactly that red color makes me think about what I see so often when we se the news in the danish television. Everything is red, so we shall not forget where they stand political, or maybe to make us all elect red. LOL ! This is a very nice simplicity, Chip.

Empty lobby, empty desk, empty mind??? Or streamlined, modern and way out in front? You do excellent work on your smoke breaks;-) Love it.

Yes, the epitome of a rotting corporate mind-set. A "yes, we'll incorporate that if it will save a dollar" mentality. All it needs is for that room to be full of bankers and mutual fund salesmen, or more-simply, to be full of suits.

This makes me want to write something on that wall--preferably something big and probably on the obscene side!! Great shot!!

I like this a lot, though the extent that I would want such empty redness would be as a picture on a wall. I like the strong red and lines, and the subtle accents of the shadows on the walls and floor. Great light and shadows, and wonderful reflections on the floor. Excellent composition and light!
