Description

The Screw Pine is not a pine, but a tropical tree. Best used as a free-standing specimen with plenty of room, they grow to 25 feet (7.6 meters) tall but also grow as wide. Many of the species are native to Madagascar, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Not a "pine" and not a woody tree but it is more closely related to palms, grasses and some orchids. The roots are significant with many brace roots increasing in number, size and width over time. Spotted in a botanical garden in Naples, Florida, at one time the gardens of botanist Dr. Henry Nehrling. The sign stated that it was planted in 1920. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Very good capture of this screwy pine, Dana. Terrific specimen of tree sprouting narrow branches down from top of the trunk. It almost looks like the framework of a teepee or hut.
