Description

The Very Large Array radio telescope near Magdelena, New Mexico. We were fortunate that all the dishes were pulled in close the day we went there. When the dishes are spread out, each of the 3 arms (like an inverted "Y") is about 13 miles long — each dish would then be 1.4 miles apart! Each dish is pretty large — 82 feet in diameter. To give you another way of conceiving the scale, notice the space below each dish - where it is resting on the concrete pillars? That space is ~ 10 feet high!
