Description

My sister Beverly and the one raccoon that needed one last hug before going into the wild. As a licensed rehabilitator, Bev receives no money from the state, and very few contributions of any kind. On average she spends about $200 on each raccoon she saves. She does it for love of the animals, knowing that the likelihood someone else will save them is practically zero. Raccoons have a reputation for being nuisance animals. The main reason is that they are too much like us; smart and opportunistic. We humans move into and destroy their homes, and expect them to behave for our convenience or just go away. Who is being the bigger nuisance?

Aaaaw, such a wonderful and moving shot. Makes my eyes mist seeing that little guy giving your sister a hug. It's all worth it for moments like this. Yep, it's pretty universal..we move into the critters habitat, bust up their homes and just expect them to move on somewhere. Not thinking that animals have territories and just where the heck they supposed to go now? People like your sister make a difference in this world. You can just tell she loves that little fella.

Wonderful. She is doing a great job. I completely agree with you. Our human carers are virtually forgotten about too whilst we are on the subject. Yes everything is all about the corporate dollar these days isn't it.

Oh my!!! This is SUCH a touching photo! Even wild animals seem to know when loving, caring humans are trying to help them...bless your sister for her devotion for helping these victims of man's urban spread...

Having a fish pond, we had three raccoons come to our yard for regular visits. Since they were wreaking havoc on the population of our rather large goldfish, we set out a safe trap, and caught two of them. We transported the raccoons to a better place with a lot less humans to interact with. We never caught the third one, and have not seen it. The reason we suddenly had raccoons was because of a severe winter in the foothills, so they came down into the valley looking for food, which is more heavily populated with humans. Raccoons can also seriously injure pets. Still, I love them, and wish them well in their new home.

I've met a few wildlife rehabbers, truly wonderful work, it takes a very special person to do it. Anytime any wildlife causes me problems, I just remember that I already have food on my table.
