Description

With a few exceptions, e.g., "Anna" I have not really been happy with the skin tones I have been getting with poserpro2012. To my mind my characters are either looking flat or plastic-like e.g. "Sprites". It is not pp2012 fault; it's been my lack of understanding of the full range of controls now available to me. Much of what was default or simply unavailable in poser 7 requires adjustment in pp2012. So I spent Sunday on a project, to learn how to get control of subsurface scattering in the material room for poserpro2012. I also realized I needed to change from my beloved DM light sets as they are now too complex when working with indirect lighting and SSS. And finally I wanted to learn the depth of field render - which allows you to create a depth of field just like with a real camera. I took Gypseyangel's Shiloh and I used the same close up head shot and rendered it over and over again with different lights from The Skin Collection by nikisatez and steadily increased the various quality and realism settings in SSS in the material room. By the end of it I was getting results where I could see the skin structure and I could control the subsurface light bounces to give that natural glow I wanted. I planned to just do a pinup on a plain background but wound up doing one that shows how depth of field can work right in a render in pp2012. For those who want to know the SSS adjustments here are my settings. Texture detail = 1.0 (maxed out from the default 0.5) Specularity = 1.0 (best for human skin) Bump detail to 1.0 I also applied SSS to her eyes sclera, iris and lacimal. Respectively this gave her brighter whites, brighter colors but with less color depth (more natural) and it lit up the inner part of her eye where the sclera ends. I turned Gamma Correction off because I prefer more saturation in my images. The focal depth was set to f 4.0 and was focused on her. She is actually a fair bit in front of the scene so the background blurs out fairly quickly. Follow the floor. I used the material room to create a reflection on the floor. I set the reflection node quality to 0.85 and used a specular node. I had a lot of fun doing this and in the end I got skin tones and structure that I really quite like.

Perfect title. She does have some hot guns. Really great work. The SSS is looking good. I've fiddled with at default and shoul post that soon. Excellent composition and pose. The DOF looks great and the foreground portrait is excellent. It kinda looks like a genie coming out of a bottle. Great glow and lighting.

All that work was worth it, Roxy. This is a wonderful result. The DOF is superb, and the SSS is really quite sensational. Love your commentary on the work behind it, too. It really shows how much work is involved in growing your skills. Rats! Now I'm going to have to upgrade my software...

Beautiful work, Roxy! She and the whole scene looks great! Always problems with new updates of programs to the start: New buttons, old "tricks" don't work any longer, so I have been conservative with DAZ uploads I use. To me the most important thing is to do works not spending hours and hours to find out new badly documented approvements! But sometimes I of course, have to...
