Description

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the campanile or free-standing bell tower of the cathedral of the City of Pisa. It is the third oldest structure in the Piazza del Duomo after the cathedral and the baptistry. The height of the tower is 55.85m (183.27-ft) from the ground to the low side and 56.70m (186.22-ft) to the high side. Prior to restoration work performed between 1990 and 2001 the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees, but the tower now leans about 3.99 degrees. The top of the tower is displaced horizontally 3.9m (12-ft,10-inches). Construction of the tower was performed in three stages across 177 years. Work on the ground floor began on August 8, 1173. The tower began to sink after construction had progressed to the second floor in 1178 (Wikipedia). This picture was taken on 11 July 2007, Sig...

very cool capture! I am so happy you did not present us with a tacky shot of someone either pushing the tower or supporting the tower.

Very lovely tower love all the columns. Its is a wonder they didn't stop at the second level seeing it was sinking instead of carrying on up.. and sort out the sinking first..

I like this VERY much! You can clearly see the lean, but you haven't taken the picture from the "standard" place. Excellent work! It's a treat to get a closer look. Your series of shots of this place has given me a much better understanding of what it is.

A marvel of engineering...both the building process and the restoration. Like your shot from this unique perspective.

When they realized the tower began to lean they started to compensate for it over the next 100years or so. BTW, this is a vertical pano of two pictures!!

when i was there it leaned more and you got dizzy because the stairs were out of line. they also didnt have guard rails on the outer levels, at the time i found that kinda scary , mind you, i must have been 12 or so lol great foto.

It is nice to see a good shot of the structure. I've always thought about going there and taking a shot from either side which shows no lean...thought that would be interesting.

The famous and sensational tower - one day, I will see it for myself! But it will probably be totally uprighted by then - oh no! Some things are better left to it's own demise ... ;) BB
