Often (particularly with new jobs) it seems as if we are drowning in information and/or tasks. Yet, as we gain mastery over simpler bits of information or automation over simpler tasks, we take on more complex information and harder tasks...

This is so true. Though once we gain total proficiency, we are, then, able to carry out our work on autopilot while we get on with the important task of gazing out of the window. Not sure how this would work for the smilies, though. :-)
