I went to Cavanaugh air museum(Addison,TX) yesterday and luck be, there was 4 WWII vintage fighters ready to do a fly over for the Veterans parade in downtown Dallas.the ground crew invited me to the runway to watch them take off.here we were directly behind all four planes

Really cool, dude. When the four blade propeller was added to the Mustang the resulting loss of directional stability was considered undesirable to the British who tested several modified tails to improve it. We, on the other hand, considered the added instability relatively minor until the bubble canopy came along. Being somewhat taller and rather abruptly terminated unlike the original, the turbulence behind the bubble exacerbated the instability leading to the development of the dorsal fin extension, including one for the B/C models that previously "didn't need it" - lol.
