Description

It’s been a year (or perhaps more) since I took this picture and it’s been sitting—patiently—in my files, awaiting the light of day. It’s—as you can see—the genitals of a plant: the insect-attractors. I spotted this in Albany Park, near the apartment Corey shares with The Roommate and nearer to the shallow, North Branch of the Chicago River. I’m not in the habit of photographing plant genitals, but I was intrigued by the whiteness of this example, and it’s almost pomegranate-red interior. I can’t name the breed of plant this may be. I’m sure someone knows what it is. In lieu of a proper, possibly Latinized name, I simply call it Irma. As I write this, I’m sitting at a kitchen table in Berwyn, Illinois; I’m visiting with Corey, as is my weekend custom. I suspect that under different circumstances, I’d have a lot to say about vegetable sexuality and the use of insect intermediaries, but as I write this, Jack Nicholson is doing that Jack Nicholson thing in the Stanley Kubrick version of Stepen King’s The Shining. I am, as you might guess, somewhat distracted and very aware of the fact that for as great a film-maker as Stanley Kubrick was, I wonder if he missed his true calling as a music video director. All of his films are visually brilliant and include some of the best music around, but his directorial style tends to dehumanize the human subjects of his films (with the most notable exception being Doctor Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Oh, I just love writing out the entire title to that film. But as I was saying, it seems to me that the standard Kubrickian focus on image and music would probably have served some earlier iteration of Lady Gaga or some such hot artist rather than a movies known for distinctly flat characterization. I do wonder, sometimes, what Stanley Kubrick scripts look like, especially in terms of movies such as The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Does. Each. Word. Carry. It’s. Own. Puntuation? Are metronomes pressed into service to ensure the correct. Laconic. Ennunciation? One wonders. Okay…Jack Nicholson’s character going distinctly insane rather violates the Kubrickian rule of pause-riddled dialogue…but dear gods! Shelly Duvall must have had a hell of a time during the filming of the Shining. I've seen and heard her act. She's pretty good at it, though she's doing other stuff now (and with blond hair.) But. In. The. Shining. She. Provides. The. Moral. And. Ethical. Center. Of. The. Movie. But. Is. Often. Forced. To. Talk. Like. This. When. She's. Not. Sniveling. Or. Whimpering. Or. Screaming. Poor lady. I hope she got paid well. This, of course, has nothing to do with the image of flower guts, but it is an explanation as to why I don’t have much to say about flower guts. At any rate, I hope you enjoy this image, and as always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great weekend.

Well, it's happened. I saw your title and thought, "Mustang, Corvette, convertible, something like that." I, who posted nothing but flowers for years, have been lured to the dark side. sigh You-know-who-One and You-know-who-Two will be SO pleased! LOL!

So what your'e saying is that William Shatner as Captain Kirk was a student of Kubrick? Irma is quite the looker although her lady parts look like enoki mushrooms. Fantastic macro and shadows with just a hint of backlighting through the petals.

I love flowers and The Shining, although not together. Of course, The Shining makes me think of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, another great Jack film. Kubrick is very dispassionate and aloof, perhaps he is an android?

Love this work, a study in detail and fragile beauty! And I agree with Orinoor here regarding Kubrick. I often wondered if he had a great disdain for humanity of "living" a as whole..." As far as King--his textured characters speaks of a love for human complexity in spite of our faults and his dark, frigthening landscapes...

Hmmmmmmmmm. Where do I begin? Love the flower. I remember that flower and the day. It was fairly near my surgery last year, and I'm pretty sure I have a few shots of it as well, although this one is better. As to your title: Being Car Geek Number Two in our circle, I immediately thought of my Grandpa Casteel's 76 Bonneville, which was white with red interior. As to The Shining...well, we just watched it three times on my sister's rocking cool Home Entertainment Center, so that has to mean something. The movie really pops on a bigger screen with the correct sound. Makes me wish I'd actually gone to see it in the theatre back in 1980. I chickened out because the commercial scared the crap out of me and I was still having nightmares from the gut buster scene in "Alien" the year before. It's sumptuously Gothic film that benefits from repeat viewings. And Shelly Duvall really does have a thankless role in it, especially playing Kubrick's flat style against a delightfully hyperventilating Jack. Why.Don't. You. Want. To. Go. To. The. Hotel. Danny? We'll. Have. Lots. Of. Fun. Fantastic. Shot. By. The. Way.

I love Mark's comment too. Excellent capture! I like the way the inners of the plant come up like a bottle brush, and then curve and split into five lively mushroom shapes that are beautifully shadowed. Wonderful colors, light, and detail. Beautiful image!
