Description

This autumn has provided the greatest crop of Bramley apples ever in my garden. Bowls, boxes, baskets have been filled. a shaft of light hit a collection on a tray....this is the result.

Marvelous! I have something of a history with apple-only still lifes and I have to say that this is one of the best that I've seen! The shaft of light is simply marvelous and the surrounding darkness gives the impression that this entire shot is a shaft of light, pretending to be fruit...light defines so much of this shot, even though there's shape and color and texture and all of that; it's a marvelous compositional trick that gives work like this a wonderful "Old Masters" feel, and the Old Masters were...well...masters at the whole "spotlight" effect. This is truly superb work.
