Description
Thank you all that viewed and supported the 5 scanned image series, "America the beautiful". This scan of Mammoth Hot Springs is for you my friends.
The majority of Yellowstone NP has an underlying layer of silica-rich Rhyolite. Here at Mammoth Hot Springs in the northwest corner of the park the underlying layer is very different. About 340 million years ago, sediments rich in Calcium Carbonate were deposited in the vicinity. It is estimated that Mammoth Hot Springs carries more than 2 tons of dissolved Calcium Carbonate to the surface. That's a flow rate of 500 gallons per minute!
Water and Carbon Dioxide combine to form a weak Carbonic acid. Carbonic acid dissolves the Calcium Carbonate-rich limestone into a solution. As the Travertine limestone solution reaches the surface, temperature decreases and the Travertine is deposited at a rate of about 8 inches per year.
There are no Geysers here at Mammoth Hot Springs, a simple explanation is that the water does not reach the boiling point of 93 Celsius. Here the waters can reach up to 75 Celsius, far from a boiling temperature. The bubbling one may see in the thermal waters at Mammoth is caused by escaping gases. The Travertine terraces that have formed here are not pressure resistant and could not withstand the force of an eruption.
