Description

This is once again for all those hard core Trek fans! However, unlike my standard Enterprise renders, I decided to move on to re-generating one of the few matte paintings that was made for the series. The original painting can be found on the internet by googling delta vega lithium cracking station. The original painting was done by Albert Whitlock and I have incredible respect for his artistry, skill, and wonderful creativity he put into the original image. In terms of artistry, Mr. Whitlock has me beat! My main function in re-generating this image is because I wanted to have a version of this picture which could be printed large and hung on my wall. I think I've achieved that. The detail in the original painting is hard to figure out and many many things in this image are represented by me through assumptions and guesses. There are also many issues in terms of perspective for how this image was realized. The perspective lines in the original image are skewed depending on which part of the original image you look at (different vanishing points). The building on the right needed to be aligned with the real world set which our famous heroes actually were filmed with. My version aligns everything to the standard XY grid which changes how much of the image comes out. However, I'm happy with the result! This image was first 100% realized in Carrara. I added a little noise, blurred it, and decreased the contrast in Paint Shop Pro. Everything else is 100% Carrara. I will say, the part of this image which I hated the most were the clouds! That was a major pain in the neck!

A superior image if ever there was one, especially the replication of such a well known image! There was always something about this one and I think you have done a better job than the original.

Very nice reproduction. I agree that the old star trek matt paintings were beautiful. My only comment is that the foreground looks a little out of place. Maybe drop the closest rock. You do nice work. Being an old st and sw fan, I've enjoyed many of your images in the past. Thanks.

Certainly one of my favorite Star Trek scenes of all time. You've done this one justice, without a doubt. Congrats on a fine offering!

Really like this version, your are correct about the perspective anomalies in the original matte painting. it's almost as if the background is located on an uneven plateau in relation to the main building. Good Job !!!!

Looks very industrial. Well done! I used to do pipe fitting when I built steel heat treating furnaces in Ohio. This reminds me of that.
