I've been sitting and looking at this, trying to understand just what about this is tickling my memory .. and then it came to me .. The Majipoor Chronicles (Robert Silverberg)! The young main character in the tale, a young Hissune man, gets a a clerical job in the labyrinth of the Pontifex, and finds himself with time on his hands, and being bored to tears he sneaks into the House of Records where the memories of millions and millions of citizens are kept. He begins to read in the archive of souls, and so we get glimpses into the lives of the folks that lived at various times in the history of Majipoor .. and this is just how I would visualize it! What an awesome render ..
