Description
They talked late into the night discussing the various aspects of dealing with the Terrible Twins, Mog and Damara. Angus listened with great interest, scarce believing his ears on some of the things they said they could do. He grew wide-eyed at times sitting there with his mouth agape and feeling a bit of a clod in their company, but then Eulali looked at him again in that way she had. "Angus, why ya think like that 'bout yersel', eh?"
"Ya know what I'm thinkin'?!" he gasped.
"Tis one of Lali's gifts," Gwidion smiled. "A bit of an annoyance at times, but also very handy! 'Tis written all o'er yer face enywhot, lad. If ye was some fetcher ye would'n be 'ere. In fact...," Gwidion paused, looking at his mother, "can I tell 'im Ma, or would you prefer ta do so?"
"Uh, what's a fetcher?" Angus asked.
"Heh!" Mab laughed. "Good question Angus, an' it leads me right in ta what Gwidion thinks he's figured out. Truth be, I suspect it masel'. I have, since Moira told me ya dreamt about 'er when ye were a wee lad. Ya said it yersel' earlier. The answer ta that is: When a fey steals a human baby, they'll often leave behind a bundle o' leaves an' twigs...an' whate'er else they might be inclined ta use...all wrapped up in a blanket nice an' tidy. The bundle is glamoured ta appear ta be the baby. 'Course, they don't live long arter thet. A 'fetcher' therefore is our way o' callin' someone 'oo ain't much better than a pile o' twigs - useless an' empty-headed.
"We b'leeve ya ta be a changeling, Angus. Ya must be or ya would' nae been dreamin' o' Moira when ya was five yarens auld." Mab continued. "There's a certain Lady o' the Mountain Clan...," she turned to Magnus then. "I think e's Bri an' Dermot's son, Magnus."
Magnus looked shocked "They 'ad a son? I din' know that!"
"Very few did," she returned her attention to Angus. "Dermit was 'alf fey an' 'alf human but 'e lived amongst the humans. When the Fey Wars began, the humans drove 'im out 'is village. It made 'im bitter toward humans, so 'e went ta live wi' the Mountain folk. Dermot was a bold an' brave warrior an' he soon rose ta be one o' the war chiefs o' the Beann-sidhe...the Mountain Fey." She sat down then, beside Eulali. "Lord Ewan, 'oo was Lady Brianna's lord was slain in a battle. She was was sore aggrieved and...well, let us say she found some comfort wi' Dermit. 'E got 'er with child an' they was happy 'til another battle came an' Dermit was slain as well. Thet were just a few moons 'fore the child were born.
"Brianna went away ta 'er sister's realm - the Mair-folk. Morna's a coille-sidhe - Forest Fey, married ta the Mair-lord. There, she delivered 'er son...so I were told. Very few e'er saw the child but they said 'e was born wi' thick red hair, an' a caul. That's all I know. I b'leeve she must 'ave changed ya up wi' a human child - most likely one was dyin', ta give back a child fer 'em, an' make sure ya was taken care of. She could' nae keep ya under the circumstances o' the times. Soo, don' 'er judge harsh, Angus. It broke 'er heart I'm sure. She ne'er had another child. Never. Ya do favor 'er looks in way. If ya like, we can take ya there an' see if she claims ya. If so, yer part fey lad - an' a large part at thet! No humans dream of us 'less we initiate it or they been amongst us - an thet's few. 'Tis a fact, lad."

"Ya do rather resemble 'em both Angus, now thet I know this," Magnus assessed him intently through narrowed eyes. "Sure ya ain't got pointy ears under all thet 'air?. Ya see Angus, the Beann Clan, the Mountain Fey, an' the Coille Clan - the Forest Fey - often intermarry or breed wi' one another. Tis traditional - or was. I am a beann-siddhe (banshee). Lord Ewan was me father's brother. Brianna is also a coille-sidhe. Mab and Brianna was friends as girls - cousins. Tis how we met - when Bri married Ewan. I think yer right Mab. I think yer right! I'll be!" he chuckled. "Sure ya got questions, Angus but I'm 'fraid we would' nae know much more than what Mab told ya. We'll go see Lady Bri an' let 'er 'ave a look at ye." "I think there's a couple ya could answer," Angus suddenly felt a bit overwhelmed with this idea. It might explain a lot of things about him and how his parents never would speak of certain things to him - like the fey. "What's it mean, 'born wi' a caul'?" "Tis a very fortunate thing, love," Moira replied, laying her hand on his shoulder to soothe him. "When ya come out, yer covered wi' the birth-veil. 'Tis considered good luck and give's ya certain powers. Yer always usin' that gut feelin', aye? That's possibly where it came from. Maybe there's other things ya don' realize yer capable of...yet. Ya will when Papa's done wi' ya," she snickered. Angus wasn't quite sure what to make of that last statement. This was all very strange. He'd heard of changelings, but now it was something a little more close to home. He sat silent for a long time then asked his other question. "Did ma parents know? Well...those 'oo raised me?" Mab shook her head, her lips compressed into a frown. "Most likely nowt. They may 'ave suspected ya was a bit odd. Can' nae say fer certain. An' I don' know thet y'are Brianna's son...but tis a distinct possibility!" ***** I wish all my friends in the US a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family - tis what it's about. And for the rest...a fabulous Thursday! Thank you for your lovely comments and for coming by. Cheers! Rayvn

I could read your story's all night long. You have a gift. What a colorful clan you portray here. Truely a family gathering. I think Moria looks the most beautiful that you have ever done her. And I have little doubt that Angus will turn out to be a changeling. To be married to a mind reader. What a scary proposition. It would certainly work to keep your thoughts pretty pure. Shows you what a special guy Gwidion is.

A fetcher eh--very ,very interesting...is this based on actual folklore (I am not familiar with a lot of the Gaelic/Celtic types stuff although I did n know about the Caul thing)--would love to learn more about that... The plot thickens as they say...Angus a changeling--what does this mean for him exactly...does this give him another outlet to longevity? I know I seem obsessed with Angus longevity but I love the idea of him being able to be around the folks for as long as they would have hm...;-)

Great image. Love the gathering of all the folk. Excellent plot twist and thickener. Beautifully written and flows so naturally. Love the poses, like a snapshot of the family caught unawares. Wonderful work.
