Description

Lake Der-Chantecoq is situated close to the commune of Saint-Dizier in the departments of Marne and Haute-Marne. It is the largest artificial lake in Western Europe, covering 48 km² with 350 million m³ of water. The lake is named after the Der plain, in which it is located, and the submerged village Chantecoq. It was created in 1974 to hold the water of the River Marne so that flooding of the Seine at Paris would stop. It is managed by Les Grands Lacs de Seine. Its construction required the destruction of three villages; Chantecoq (Marne), Champaubert-aux-Bois (except the church, see the shadow on my picture) and Nuisement-aux-Bois. "Bird watching at Lac du Der - Chantecoq" The combination of deep water, islands, and freshwater marshes make the area ideal for waterfowl, most notably the common crane. Each spring and autumn, tens of thousands of cranes assemble here in their migration between wintering grounds to the south and breeding sites in northern Europe. Other birds recorded in the area include white-tailed eagle, great egret, and various geese, ducks, loons (divers), and grebes. The surrounding area is rural, a region of farmland and forest. Le lac du Der-Chantecoq ou lac-réservoir Marne (souvent abrégé en lac du Der) est un lac du nord-est de la France. Il est situé dans la région Champagne-Ardenne, à la limite des départements de la Marne et de la Haute-Marne. Avec une superficie de 48 km2, il est le plus grand lac artificiel d'Europe Construit pour protéger Paris des inondations, le lac du Der-Chantecoq a pour but de renforcer le débit de la Marne en étiage et d'en atténuer l'ampleur des crues. Il doit son nom à la fois au pays du Der, région naturelle où il est implanté, et au village de Chantecoq qui fut détruit avec ceux de Champaubert-aux-Bois et Nuisement-aux-Bois lors de la construction du lac dans les années 1960 et 1970. Seule subsiste l'église de l'ancien village de Champaubert-aux-Bois (dont on voit l’ombre sur ma photo) au sommet de la colline sur l'actuelle presqu'île de Champaubert, sur la partie est du lac.
Le lac du Der est classé zone spéciale de conservation par le réseau Natura 2000 depuis septembre 1986 sur une superficie de 6 536 ha, notamment pour son importance ornithologique majeure, puisqu'il est un lieu de reproduction, d'hivernage ou une étape dans la migration de nombreux oiseaux. On y dénombre plus de 200 espèces, dont certaines sont protégées. Il est surtout connu pour les nombreuses grues cendrées (jusqu'à 70 000 ou 80 000) qui y font escale, chaque année, au cours du mois de novembre. Près de la moitié des 230 000 grues qui traversent la France feraient étape sur le lac. Thank you very much for your comments on my previous upload :
