Description

The 2.5 billion dollar Mar$ rover The biggest rover ever made (8ft high - 15 ft long) N.A.S.A. Curiosity Mission: Canada is Going Back to Mars Montreal, Quebec, Saturday 10:02 AM ET, NASA will take a bold new step in the exploration of Planet Mars with the launch of a new rover, Curiosity. Curiosity is the centerpiece of the Mars Science Laboratory mission and will seek to determine if the Red Planet has ever had conditions supportive of life. Scheduled to launch November 26, 2011, Curiosity will carry a Canadian-made science instrument that will enable the rover to determine the chemical composition of the rocks and soil on Mars. Canadian instrument Roughly the size of a soup can, the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS)'s sensor will be able to gather data day and night. APXS, which sits on the end of the rover's robotic arm, will move in close to a sample and bombard it with alpha particles and X-rays to study its composition, including trace elements. APXS is provided by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), with Dr. Ralf Gellert of the University of Guelph as the Principal Investigator. NASA will hold a briefing about the mission on Nov 10 at 1 p.m., on N A S A - T V just before the launch Thanks Magik ________________________________________________________ Véhicule robotisé à 2,5 milliards de $ N.A.S.A. Merci Magik

Excellent upload Magik. Your details on the mission are wonderful. I'm guessing they wont find any signs of organic activity, but it is still exciting to know they are able to.

A signal from NASA's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft, including the new Curiosity rover, was received by officials on the ground shortly after spacecraft separation. The spacecraft is flying free and headed for Mars after separation from the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket that started it on its journey to the Red Planet. Liftoff was on time at 10:02 a.m. EST from Space Launch Complex 41 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. "Our spacecraft is in excellent health and it's on its way to Mars," said Pete Theisinger, Mars Science Laboratory Project Manager from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. He thanked the launch team, United Launch Alliance, NASA's Launch Services Program and NASA's Kennedy Space Center for their help getting MSL into space. "We are ready to go for landing on the surface of Mars, and we couldn't be happier," said John Grotzinger, Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist from the California Institute of Technology. "I think this mission will be a great one. It is an important next step in NASA's overall goal to address the issue of life in the universe." Grotzinger added, "It is important to distinguish that as an intermediate mission between (Mars Exploration Rovers), which was the search for water, and future missions, which may undertake life detection, our mission is about looking for ancient habitable environments." "Science fiction is now science fact," said Doug McCuisition, director of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters. "We're flying to Mars. We'll get it on the ground... and see what we find."

Fine work and scene, Magik!! If this rover find traces of bacterial life or alike it will end the discussion of the Earth as the only place with life as I see as completely unlikely statistically. But on the other hand in spite of my dreams I don't believe we find other en bacterial and non-intelligent life because of the distances are huge. On the other hand - do we really have intelligent life on Earth? ;o)
