Visualisation of a concept for a large habitat concept, drawing upon prehistoric models of early cliff-dwelling peoples. The South-facing canyon wall supporting thin-film photovoltaics, while the North-facing wall contains deep-tunnel habitats....well-protected from direct solar radiation and overhead cosmic radiation. Cantilevered tunnel shields protect emerging vehicles from inadvertent rock debris falling from the canyon walls. Airlocks are set back deep into the excavation, to allow Martian dust ('fines') to be cast off wheels etc over a series of mesh-screened static-precipitation cavities over which returning vehicles pass before entering pressurised areas. Underground vehicles galleries are segregated from personnel accommodation, with workshops and garaging located well beyond the external airlocks, spacious enough to house the largest overland landtrains or landships.
