Description

We saw this buzzard last month in Frampas, a small village near Montier-en-Der. Contrary to most of the raptors of this species, this bird was not timorous and did not fly away when we stopped the car in front of him. Because of this different behavior, we thought it could be a Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) instead of a Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo)... May be someone can help for the identification (more pictures to come) ? Nous avons aperçu cette buse le mois dernier à Frampas, un petit village près de Montier-en-Der. Contrairement aux autres rapaces de cette espèce, cet oiseau n’était pas si farouche et ne s’est pas envolé dès que nous avons arrêté la voiture à sa proximité... Ce qui nous incitait à penser que plutôt qu’une Buse variable (Buteo buteo), il pourrait s’agir d’une Buse pattue (Buteo lagopus)... Qui peut nous aider (plus de photos dans les prochains jours) ? Judging by the colour of the talons I am quite sure this is a Buzzard (buteo buteo) not the rough legged. Nice shot.

The subspecies arrigonii is known to live in Corsica and Sardinia... this one was shot in Champagne-Ardenne (northeast France)... :~)

I've had a look in my bird book which suggests that the pale "U" shape across the middle is an identifier of the common buzzard, not the rough-legged. Hope that helps!
