Description

It seems like there's always something going on around here, and having "spare time" is like a little magic trick! Helle and Andrea warned me that being retired would NOT produce more down time, and they were right. I don't have any more now than I did when I was working full time! Anyway. There are a couple things I've been wanting to do ... when I got around to it ... and this is one of them. I have a painting and drawing program called ArtRage, which I love. One of its features is that you can bring a photograph into the program and work on it right in ArtRage. In the past I've imported photographs into ArtRage, set them up as their own layer, and used them to trace an outline for something I then painted "from scratch." Once I had the outline, I only used the photograph as a reference ... turned off the layer, and layed down and blended paint. (Virtual paint, of course.) I posted those images in the 2-D gallery, because they were true paintings. This is different. I imported the photograph into ArtRage and then used the pallet knife to blend the colors that were on the actual photograph. So. THIS IS NOT A PAINTING!! It's a photograph that's been postworked. Think of it as using the smudge tool in Photoshop, only it's a much more versatile tool. It was so much fun I've already done a second picture this way, having learned from my first try! I could skip showing you this first one, but then you wouldn't see my progress. On this one, I took a photograph straight out of the camera, did the "painting" postwork in ArtRage, and then Photoshopped the resulting image for contrast and light. The second one, which I'll show you later, I postworked heavily in Photoshop and THEN did the knife postwork in ArtRage. AhHA! :) I can't wait to try another one. Whoo-hoo! This is fun! Note: Brigitte wanted to see the postwork progression from original photograph to finished product. You can see it HERE.

This is gorgeous! I found the soundtrack to The Last Emperor on CD and I'm listening to it as I make this comment! Needless to say the result is nicely haunting. The Last Emperor...well...its soundtrack was the very last soundtrack I'd purchased on vinyl so it's pretty odd and haunting hearing it now on my laptop! Anyway, this image is completely hypnotic. The inner bits of flowers are always far more alien and intriguing than the whole of the flower as seen from a distance, and you've caught that odd "alien tongue" bit of what I take to be an iris. The colors and the blending and the painterly aspects of this non-photographic shot are fantastic. Marvelous. And speaking of spare time, I don't really have much of that either...something has gone terribly wrong in the dental industry in the Midwest...everyone's stuff is broken and in need of immediate replacement...I suspect I'll be getting an emergency call in a few minutes as the past two weeks have been nothing but emergency calls...and what does that have to do with this? Nothing, but I can sympathize with you having less free time than when you were pre-retired.

Spare time...... What is that, exactly? This is just lovely, Tara! I love the painterly, yet realistic enough that you have to look twice (or more) to see what is really happening here. I like that! Wow - I haven't even opened up ArtRage in a month of forevers.... I really need to fix that.... ArtRage is a really cool little application. Wonderful, fun work! Oh, and yes, I'll take some bottles - especially if they have a little Kentucky_Sippin_Bourbon.obj in them! LOL!

... and the result is mind-boggling! but I would have liked to see this, compared to the original, (next to each other), to see what difference it made? just a thought! It would be nice ... BTW purple - one of my colours - stunning work, BB

Having looked over your shoulder at how this is done...the result is outstanding! I applaud you taking the time to do some of those fun things that are on your to-do list. Let's see is this a short, mid or a long term goal;-)

Great work looking forward to seeing more versions of it. There is no such thing as retiring only changing directions, dropping the things you don't want to do and doing more of the ones you want to, lots more.
