Description

Vickie's sudden arrival wrong-footed the Rogues. JS soon realized that the brief confrontation in the Orion Nebula hadn't allowed Vickie's identification. Her cruiser class was alien to both to the Rogues and the EA. Instead the Rogues were fully convinced Etta was the ill-famed Jay Sea's ghost ship. "They'll award us the Golden Fang for Sea's destruction!" The Rogues radioed like a mantra. Soon Victory's fighters engaged the Rogue scythes in a fierce dogfight, while JS directed his guns' fire at the two carriers. After an intense exchange of fire a stroke hit the flight deck of the closer one, just when she was opening it to launch her second assault wave of fighters. The ship exploded in a fireball. A moment later the second carrier jumped into the hyperspace, abandoning her fighters. "Captain Nikki, are you able to jump?" "We are, sir." "Order your fighters back to mom." Stranded in the space the Rogue fighters went on attacking bull-headedly. "We could offer them to surrender, couldn't we?" Eve suggested. "Let them to their fate. Their ship will came back with the cavalry, I'm afraid. At the moment we aren't able to face a battle against superior forces, Eve." JS replied and ordered: "At my signal jump." The moment they jumped Roma radioed Alpha Mike Foxtrot. Later JS went aboard Etta to assess the damage. Etta was damaged and in very low spirits. "I've failed you, Jay!" Etta cried. "No, Etta, it's my fault," he replied. "You and Nikki needed more training." A cold anger grabbed JS. "It was my mistake, Eve. Why Rogue warships are in that area? what's their destination?" "You couldn't know about it." Eve suggested. "Etta isn't too battered, Jay." Vickie offered. To reach the Mordor JS chose a route even more labyrinthine than the former, but no one complained. It was evident the commander was in a black mood. The Rogue pilots' fate had shaken the crew. During a break in the mess hall Lee gave voice to the collective distress. "How could the Rogue captain abandon his men?" "Rogue ROE. Men are cannon fodder just ships count." Roma snapped. "Likely they'd hit us on the flight deck, pretending to surrender." "And the law of the space?" asked Rhino, an Oculoid just enlisted as a mechanic. "Jumping was the right thing to do. Taking the Rogues on board would expose us to an unacceptable risk, Chief." Ishikawa stated. "People on the run doesn't take prisoners." JS added. "This is guerrillas' rule number one." "But leaving them alone in space!" someone muttered. "You're sorry for a few, and not a breath for the 6000s exploded with the carrier!" Roma uttered. "This is war. The real thing, not a rough-and-tumble. Anyway, I left a beacon over there." JS ended the discussion. Eve squeezed his hand supportively. Arriving at the Mordor JS entered the wreck with the G'wak. "What did you see? Where was this body? Gnonde gera 'sto cadavoro?" JS said, explaining his words with gestures and pointing to an orc. Corpses were floating through the wreck driven in their continuous wandering by the bouncing on themselves and the Mordor's hull. Green and red blood globs shattered by their intrusion like jelly cakes, caromed reflecting the light like Christmas balls. The G'wak pointed to a place. JS saw in his mind what he had seen. "Maurr wasn't among the dead, Eve!" JS's morale relieved just a bit. Flotsam, coming from the cockpit, suddenly found himself face to face with an dead insectoid. A shattering shriek exploded. Flotsam stood motionless staring at the corpse, his mouth twisted, beads of sweat covering his face, but the turmoil in his mind was the opposite of his immobility. Insectoids' hordes were killing, burning, kidnapping, sacking... "Hell! They were fleeing from an insectoids' assault!" JS thought. On the ship Jetsam and Hodgepodge began to cry. A repressed memory came back to haunt them. -- Thanks!

The anti-gravity sure does play havoc with those mutated critters and it makes it a whole heap easier to clear this bug infestation ! BTW, thanx for the Burfday wishes, very kool ! ~Cheers~

Terrific scene and great chapter. I like that they were discussing their questions about leaving the pilots openly. That conversation is very interesting with the different experiences and opinions of those talking. I like how Jay's black mood eased a bit when he realized Maurr wasn't on the ship. It's a good reminder of all the issues that Jay is dealing with all the time. Excellent image. Wonderful detail and composition. The random floating bodies are positioned really well, and the "eye contact" between the dead insectoid and Flotsam is very dramatic and well done. Excellent work!
