Description

Sphyrapicus ruber. Found in Madera Canyon, southern Arizona, USA. This is a rarity here, with just a few records. I am aware of two places where he has been seen in this area this year. I didn't find him the first place, so today I decided to try the second place. I drove up to Whitehouse parking lot, parked next to the entrance, walked through the ramada, and saw a picnic table, and thought, I'll just sit there and see what turns up. When I got there, I prayed to see him, turned around, and he was about six feet away. He was there a long time, and I took lots of pictures.

I really like your story, dear Pat, about searching and finding this rare bird ! I would do the same in my area (and hopefully one day in Tucson....) Excellent shot with an amazing orientation ! :~)
