Description

The last defender of the city told the attacking Saracens that he would not surrender this holy place to anyone less than their leader, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn (Saladin). The message was heard and taken and a few hours later, blood soaked and battle weary, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb, leader of the entire muslim world at the time, strode into the little church and calmly looked down at the crusader. And after a few minutes of mutually respectful looks, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn asked the kneeling man in front of him: What is Jerusalem? Your holy palaces lie over the Jewish temple that the Romans pulled down. The Muslim places of worship lie over yours. Which is more holy? The wall? The Mosque? The Sepulchre? Who has claim? No one has claim. All have claim! Go in PEACE! This is a word all men should regard in the highest.
