Picture taken on August 15th, 2011 10:06 in Rulles (Belgium) Close by our house, there is an Ash tree; the leaves are often among the last to open in spring, and the first to fall in autumn if an early frost strikes; I have been amazed at the variety of birds landing in this tree; one reason is certainly that Ashes are used as food plants by the larvae (caterpillars) of a number of Lepidoptera species (see list !) The European Goldfinch or Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) is a small passerine bird in the finch family. The goldfinch breeds across Europe, North Africa, and western and central Asia, in open, partially wooded lowlands. It is resident in the milder west of its range, but migrates from colder regions. It will also make local movements, even in the west, to escape bad weather.
