Description
...Early 20th Century buildings (with one or two exceptions) along Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
...these buildings face directly onto a wide park that today separates "the wall" from the shoreline of Lake Michigan.
...In 1885, William Le Baron Jenney built in Chicago what is known as the first skyscraper in the world: the Home Insurance Building. Demolished in 1931, it was 55 meters tall and included 9 stories, later extended to 11. It was built with a load-carrying structural frame, which would be the basic structure for all later skyscrapers. The Home Insurance Building marks the start of Chicago as a pioneering architectural city. Many famous architects like Louis Sullivan and later Mies van der Rohe would set new standards for urban architecture in Chicago.
...Daniel Burnham designed the first visionary urban plan for a city, the 1909 Chicago plan. It was nicknamed 'Paris on the Prairie' and included wide boulevards and parks.

Of particular interest here is the decorative lower and upper floors of the older buildings and the total lack of such in the modern buildings. You've done a good job catching the contrast here. I wonder what it would cost today to build in that style. And, thanks for the historical notes. I wager most people don't know Chicago was first with a sky scraper, then New York got infected with the bug and has since become associated with these buildings. Keep up the good work! :-)

I love this view of Chicago. All the little details, the different types of stone and brick, the architectural gems ... and they hint at the promise of more and more behind them! The first time I saw "The Wall" I found it a little intimidating, but now it sucks me in. So ... when are we going back? :)

Here is great shot Bill.. This shows what I most dislike about ALL Cities and towns.. Their seeming 'need' to fill a space with something that does not in any way suit or blend with the buildings around.. Prince Charles, the aire to the British throne hates this sort of thing.. And I agree wholeheartedly! That is not to say, that modern building should not be built, no, they need to be, but in a way that fits with not clashes glaringly with ALL around, like here.. London has done the same.. Old buildings can be 'upgraded', new ones built behind old.. Anyway enough.. I think your picture is really fine Bill, a great shot.. Well taken... Stunning architecture and then someone sticks a glass monstrosity in the middle...WHY??? I'm sure Prince Charles would have something to say about this 'carbunckle'.No wonder the flag is half mast, the death of good taste. Amazing view, you found a great vantage point.I'd put these on a yellow stone, brown brick and then red brick timeline.The Autumn leaves give a nice contrast and time stamp.

Fantastic. Columbia College (my Alma Mater) occupies two of the buildings in this shot. One is the taller building directly touching (on the right) that new, glassy construction (East-West University, I think...it got a facelift!) and the other Columbia College campus building is two doors to the left. That's the former Torco Building. Okay, enough of that stuff...what a shot! This is one of my favorite views of Chicago, as it usually indicates that I'm seeing it with good company. Either that, or it means Buckingham Fountain is spitting on my back. I love the light and the colors in this shot and the actual scale of that part of the city. This is brilliant.
