Description

Just before dawn on May 29th 1942, an unidentified aircraft circled Sydney Harbour on Australia's eastern coast. War in the Pacific was just six months old. Since the aircraft brazenly displayed navigation lights, air defence observers first assumed it was a seaplane from the anchored heavy cruiser USS Chicago and the alarm was only raised belatedly when it became clear that the Chicago's Curtiss Seagulls were all stowed away. The intruder slipped out to sea and disappeared before fighters were scrambled. The explanation came the following evening as the chaotic IJN midget submarine attack on Sydney unfolded. The night visitor, represented here, was a "portable" Yokosuka E14Y1 floatplane ("Glen" to the Allies), launched by I-21, one of the seaplane-carrying submarines supporting the operation. When not in use, the floatplane could be folded up and stowed in a watertight capsule forward of the submarine's conning tower. E14Y1 Modelled in Shade 10. Rendered in Vue 8 Esprit Thanks for viewing

Amazing. Did not know the Japanese had such a system, and what an ingenious one it was. Thanks for the bit of history. Great image too, really captures the depth of flying over the Pacific in a small plane.

Nice render! It really captures the time of day and has a great moody quality to it. About the story behind the flight...audacity has it's perks! Very nice modeling to boot. Any chance we'll see this on "share"?
