Description

You'd think taking time off I'd actually be doing non-computer non-art activities but instead I've chosen a bit of "hair of the dog" and created a slew of Songbird ReMix freebies including 4 new species of Chickadee and the Hoary Redpoll. Pictured Left to Right: The Hoary Redpoll (male perched, female in flight), the Mexican Chickadee, the Carolina Chickadee, the Chestnut-backed Chickadee and the Boreal Chickadee. Okay, now a little about the Chickadees (look at my previous image for Redpoll info) The Boreal Chickadee is found in North America; Alaska, Canada and Northern edges of the continental United States. The preferred habitat is conifer forests. It's population has been dramatically decreasing thanks to natural resources exploitation in Canada (timber, oil sands). The Carolina Chickadee looks so close to it's Northern cousin, the Black-capped Chickadee that even the two species have trouble figuring out who's who. The Carolina has browner wings and a shorter, squarer tail. As the name suggests, the Carolina Chickadee is found throughout the Southern US. The Chestnut-backed Chickadee is found in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and western Canada, from southern Alaska to southwestern California. It has adapted with little problem to man, so it's population is expanding. The Mexican Chickadee is a permanent resident of wooded highlands in western, central and northeastern Mexico, the range extends north into extreme southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Although primarily non-migratory, Mexican Chickadees sometimes fly to lower elevations during the cold of winter. The Mexican Chickadee's song is distinct from other chickadees; it is a complex 'burry' trilled whistle of 'chischu-wur' and a rich 'cheelee'. They travel in pairs or small groups, and may join multi-species feeding flocks. Populations of this Chickadee are dropping due to timber extraction in Mexico. happy holidays!
