Description

This is a pair of Cooter turtles, in the lake, in our backyard. They grow about 16 inches (40 cm) long. The young are carnivorous while the adults are vegetarians. My field guide states that they are not normally found this far south in Florida. My field guide was printed in 1961. They lay between 12 and 29 eggs. They do come out on the banks of the lake to warm up in the sun. It was 82 degrees today. They are not cute but try zoom anyway. They do have nasty claws if you notice lower left. To be absolutely frank, Dana, I thought this was a high altitude foto of some isolated islands or islets in an unnamed ocean. Otherwise, nice clarity, contrast and blue color in this backyard capture.
