Description

"Elliptical wings, fixed landing gear, meatballs on the wings, that's no Peter 47!" insisted signalman John Gomperts against the counter report of the control officer that the plane off of the starboard bow, of the disabled destroyer USS Ross, was a friendly. It was October of 1944, the Ross had lost both engine rooms after hitting two mines near the entrance of Leyte Gulf. The ship spent most of the time with the hull flooded, anchored near Tacloban airfield and had to help fend off many IJN air attacks on MacArthur's landing force. My Dad turned 90 years old in December and is one of the two last living crewmen to serve aboard the Fletcher class Destroyer USS Ross in the Pacific theater of WWII. I look to you for help, O Sovereign LORD. You are my refuge; don't let them kill me. Stunning tribute to your Father and all those shipmates he has seen pass away.We are fortunate that we can only wonder at the horror of those times. It is through the eyes of your Father and his comrades that we see the futility of war.As there numbers dwindle we must never forget their sacrifice or our lessons will come from being plunged into another possibly darker time for which we seem ill equipped at best. Warmest best wishes for the New Year, and as your Father enters a 91st New Year, may it be the first of many more, he has my utmost respect and gratitude and heart felt best wishes...thank you for a wonderful post...

Great scene RG fabulous work, and tribute to all those that saw action in WW2 especially to the families of those, that like your dad, served on the Fletcher class Destroyer USS Ross in the Pacific theater of WWII. May we never forget the futility of war.. May you and your family have a wonderful New Year.. God Bless..

Beautiful render. I recall reading about the USS Ross some time ago, but never expected to have contact with anyone related to that ship. You've done a good job depicting the damage to the hull. It was definitely difficult in the sun, haze and smoke to identify whether a plane or ship was friend or foe. This was used by both sides to try to sneak in. It also contributed to death from friendly fire. All the best to your father! May he have many more good years! Keep up the good work! :-)
