Ya know, there's a permanent puddle behind the house I live in, currently...it's the puddle that never really vanishes...though it's gone dry recently. I like it because it's home to such a large colony of daphnia (water fleas) and I wonder if such critters are common to other flood plains. This shot reminds me of where I often go hunting for daphnia, though now, I've got a thriving colony of my own and I no longer have to hunt for them...I just keep them well fed and they seem reasonably happy. Okay, that has nothing to do with this image, but this image is a wonderful snapshot of the natural world and it sets my mind off in all sorts of directions. Great photography does that and this is, indeed, a fantastic image. I particularly like the swampy, squishy mood this has, and it also makes me think that a duck-billed dinosaur might come ambling into the area at any minute!
