Devil's Den
Another shot from my last visit to the Battlefield.
It was typical of the soldiers of the time to prefix features on a battlefield with the terms Bloody, Hell's or Devil's.
In this case, Devil's Den pre-dates the Civil War. The actual origin of the Term is lost to history. One of the explanations I heard was that at one time there was a 10 ft King snake named the Devil that would come out and sun itself on the rocks. Because the snake made this area his living area it then became known as the Devil's Den.
During the battle it took on another meaning as the the soldiers tried to maintain rank and file while maneuvering through the boulder field while under enemy and friendly fire.
Enjoy.
