Of course, is not the same like old times, but you can try use an low ISO, and use a filling flash to freeze the kid. Let him draw a little and then fire an external flash. You could use an old flash in manual. However, Grain could improve an image sometimes.

yeah I know... THXXX! :-D big plans to 'paint with light' again, cuz nowadays you have neat little, yet powerful white & colored lights :-D better than before, when we used about 'anything' and even ran around firing flashguns, having fun fun ... :-D however, this camera seems to have a mind of it's own (!) when I tried to shoot horsies in front of a plough/plow, dark 'daytime' weather, it even refused certain settings. (i.e. faster shutter speed to avoid motion blur, 'thus' higher ISO value). while it has every mode and all manual options on board. fun fun ... ggrrr (must be me? ;-D) in 'this case' didn't bring a flash. didn't think of shooting people either. wrestling with a tripod, trying to stay alive ;-D TY, Neto!!! :-D

I finally went and bought a Nikon D300 a couple years back. It is a very different animal for me too compared to my 35mm Nikon 2020. The manual with the camera gives very little guidance, it's all up to you going through a learning process. Good thing though about that learning process is that you don't have any limit on the number of images or have to pay to develope them all. May you find peace and happiness with your new purchase in the coming year! :~)
