Description

Happy Birthday my good friend and many more to come. This is a Blue Morph Butterfly (Morpho peleides) and is colored in metallic, shimmering shades of blue and green. These colors are not a result of pigmentation but are an example of iridescence, the microscopic scales covering the Morphs wings reflect incident light. Thus the colors produced vary with viewing angle. The iridescent scales are only present on the dorsal side of their wings (the open wing view), leaving the ventral side (closed wing view) brown. I was sad to find the Blue Morph, in the top photo, with a damaged wing but it does give you a peek of the iridescent blue colors on the inside, while the wings are closed. Very good shots of this dazzling creature.I've been told that the dark side is for camoflage and that the bright side is to attract a mate or to startle predators.
