Description

It seemed the every news show on New Years weekend had to have a least one story of a "Polar Bear Club" - a gaggle of otherwise sane people donning their swimsuit and jumping into a body of frigid water - in some cases they even had to cut holes in the ice. At the Hotel Del Coronado on New Years day I found these folks enjoying the pool. Of course, these folks aren't really "Polar Bears" - the pool is heated to 80 degrees and well protected from the wind - which was howling at 3 mph at the time. Now THAT'S the kind of Polar Bear Club I would join. Enjoy

Beautiful picture. Here is a 'polar bear' story for you. For the last several years members of my former unit are going TDY to McMurdo Sound, Antartica, to support the effort to re-supply several Antartic stations during the summer months (November to end of January). At Mc Murdo Sound, scientists and various temporary employees (students, retired and/or active duty military personnel) cut a hole in the ice (the ice is 6-ft thick). Some of them get dunked (if they so desire), stark naked, on a tether to become members of that club. They have to sign a waver, so there cannot be any lawsuits in case somebody bites the dust. Crazy? I think so.
