Description

This is the American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) and it is native to the southeastern United States and Australia. It can typically reach 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) in height. A jelly can be made from its ripe berries. It has also been used to produce wine. I found it, in the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, the northernmost portion of the Everglades. With over 221 square miles (596.47 km2) of Everglades habitat, the Loxahatchee Refuge is home to the American alligator and as many as 257 species of birds may use the Refuge's diverse wetland habitats each year. The flowers are in clusters, white to pinkish and will draw in butterflies when in bloom. The fruit is a berry, reddish purple with a highly distinctive metallic luster. American beautyberry has been found to be a natural insect repellent to mosquitoes, which can carry yellow fever and malaria, as well as the tick, which carries Lyme disease. This photo was taken 2 days ago and rotated 90 degrees for a better view. Some info from Wikipedia. Zoom works. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

What a wonderful plant! Berries that can be made into jelly, wine, a bug repellent...and I'm sure many birds love them also. A very valuable plant to have around!! And a great shot! We have had a flock of about 20 robins around for the past few days, stripping our ornamental cherry and crab apple trees as well as our holly bushes. The bushes were LOADED with berries, but how there is not a spot of read to be seen. I love planting shrubs and trees that the birds love!

I had only ever seen these in photos, until a couple of months back when I noticed that my neighbors across the street have it growing up the side of their house, and it was COVERED in purple berries. Really lovely! Great closeup of this "beauty"!
