Description

Last November, I was stunned to realize that it had been fifty-five years since I was stationed in Korea. Although I retain memories and images from that time as clear as the moment that I saw them, I do know time has passed. Almost daily, I am reminded by television, book, and magazine images that not only time has passed but great changes have occurred in Seoul, Inchon, and Kimpo AB since 1956-57. If I were to go back today, I'd be totally disoriented. I'm pretty sure one of my favorite walks in a beautiful rural valley just on the west edge of Seoul is probably leveled and buried under miels of new construction. Ah well. Such is progress. I wonder sometimes, what else has disappeared. I loved the Korean culture. It made me first truly aware that most people have lived on this Earth without my American values. That there was goodness in diversity. And that all cultures have their advantages and disadvantages, including my own. (I know some say that American as no culture, but it is not true. We do.) I was impressed with the diginity of the ordinary people. Long after I had left, I brought home a bit of Korea--my daughter, Emily, who was a G.I. baby. My missionary friend who picked her out for us, sent along a traditional little girl's dress--a Hanbok with green, red, and yellow vertical stripes. I had it put in a box frame under glass, which she proudly hss hung on her dining room wall. I'd been trying to find some models of a hanbok for quite a few years. Had given up a long time ago. The other day, I was looking through Rendo's Closeout section and darned if I didn't find a hanbok! So, I guess this is my small tribute to the Korean people. Thanks for looking.
