Description
Taken at Long Beach, NY. This just struck me as odd. Who built up this mound of sand? Were these lifeguards? Were they rich people who paid to have a spot in the sand above everyone else? Were they just pranksters or eccentrics who had done this on a lark? If so, how did they do it? It seems like they would have needed heavy equipment to move that much sand. And where did the sand come from? There's no indication from the surrounding area that sand has been removed. So many questions...

My biggest question is WHY??? The view isn't any different from up there than it is from down here. The ocean's horizon is just the horizon. It might be farther away, but ... so what? That was a lot of work for very little benefit. Terrific shot!

What a great shot and it was a great idea for whatever reason. I bet it is a soft place to sit too.

I checked your link, Bill. The only problem is that the hurricane preparation was in August 2011 & I took this picture in June 2007. It's possible they were preparing for another hurricane in 2007, but that just didn't seem right to me. I was prepared to leave this a mystery, but your response got me searching for an answer & I found it here: http://www.loving-long-island.com/long-beach.html Turns out this was a lifeguard station after all...

Just read the other comments and erased mines as your picture was taken in 2007 while Hurricane Irene preparedness was years after that. It could be that the Army Corps of Engineers had done some work for beach erosion's in that area. Interesting shot and post. Aloha
