Landmannalaugar... by KarmaSong

I've just finished reading an excellent Icelandic thriller written by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir and the fact I have uploaded this shot has something to do with it ! I took this photo a couple of years ago, as I was hiking in the Landmannalaugar region, near the volcano Hekla in the southern section of Iceland's highlands. The Landmannalaugar area is a popular though remote tourist destination in Iceland. The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains you can see here. The many mountains in the surrounding area display a wide spectrum of colors including pink, brown, green, yellow, blue, purple, black, and white. The hot springs that hikers may encounter in the mountains have given Landmannlaugar its actual name, which means 'the peoples' pools'...Please zoom in !
Thank you very much for all the nice comments you've written in my gallery lately, and have a nice and artistic weekend!

Incredible scene, I must say! What a fascinating place and indeed the geological structures here and the natural beauty is stunning and truly something to admire for hours! Exceptional colours and presentation. It does look absolutely magical!

Good capture! I was there in 1976 [before the wall fell]. We geologists stayed in a wood hostel of sorts next to a large AaAa lava flow and geothermal heated streams in the sediments next to the flow that the hostel was built on. At night we climbed to the top of the AaAa flow behind the hostel. It was covered with light gray lichen, there was ground mist, and we saw a labyrinth of crevasse that we found were lined black obsidian crystal shards [one of us cut their hand]. From the top we could see a fumarole in the distance, but we had to make our way through the labyrinth by walking a maze on the top of the flow. When we got to the fumarole it was warm, jetting out steam, and covered with white and yellow salts. During the day we hiked around hills as your picture shows, but the hostel was in a wide flat area crisscrossed by multiple meandering streams we had to wade across. Gullfoss, Mývatn & Askja are other neat places to visit. It was a magical place for me. Thanks for the reminder.

wow that is stunning. Looks like quite a hike. And the book sounds very interesting as well. I am amazed at all the different colors in the photo. I don't paint but I am sure for someone that does it would be a great project.
