Wallpaper image for today IMPORTANT NEWS ---------- The largest solar flare since 2005 has started to hit the Earth, bombarding the planet with magnetic particles that could disrupt satellite communications, announced Monday the U.S. authorities. The rash, which erupted Sunday near the center of the sun, should project particles of protons toward the earth until Wednesday, warned the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). "The eruption itself was nothing spectacular but it was projected into space a coronal mass (plasma cloud in the magnetic field, ie) to the phenomenal rate of 6.4 million kmh," said to AFP Doug Biesecker, physicist at the Center for Space weather Prediction from NOAA. The geomagnetic storm caused by the sun is highest since 2005 but it is ranked in category 3 on a scale that has 5, he said. It is therefore considered "strong" but not "severe." According to the website of the NOAA, a Class 3 can cause disturbances in the computer systems on board satellites and radio communications at the poles. Air navigation, oil platforms and browsers may encounter and discomfort in these areas. "We do not expect any major impact of an event of this kind," said Dr. Biesecker. The people of Europe and Asia could benefit as well on Tuesday night to watch the northern lights, he said. L'éruption, qui s'est déclenchée dimanche près du centre du soleil, devrait projeter des particules de protons en direction de la planète jusqu'à mercredi, a averti l'Administration nationale des océans et de l'atmosphère (Noaa). «L'éruption elle-même n'avait rien de spectaculaire mais elle a projeté dans l'espace une masse coronale (nuage de plasma au champ magnétique intense, ndlr) à la vitesse phénoménale de 6,4 millions de kmh», a déclaré à l'AFP Doug Biesecker, physicien au Centre de prévision météorologique spatiale de la Noaa. La tempête géomagnétique provoquée par le soleil est la plus forte depuis 2005 mais elle ne se classe qu'en catégorie 3 sur une échelle qui en compte 5, a-t-il précisé. Elle est donc considérée comme «forte» mais pas «sévère». Selon le site internet de la Noaa, un événement de catégorie 3 peut provoquer des perturbations dans les systèmes informatiques embarqués à bord de satellites ainsi que dans les communications radio au niveau des pôles. La navigation aérienne, les plateformes pétrolières et les explorateurs pourraient ainsi rencontrer une gêne dans ces régions. «Nous n'attendons pas d'impact majeur d'un événement de ce type», a souligné M. Biesecker. Les habitants d'Europe et d'Asie pourraient aussi en profiter mardi soir pour admirer des aurores boréales, a-t-il expliqué. Thanks Magik
